Yes, I actually asked it. Why are the Dark Queens evil, and I don't mean this as "there's a dark, shadowy secret to their past" or "it's their roles as the villains."
I'm talking about their mindsets.
Jovian & Jacqueline, Aeon, Seraph, and Twilight are among the most evil villains I've EVER read about in a story. They are, by far, more powerful and more dangerous than Lord Voldemort. Their cruelty is both terrifying and unbelievable. The idea that ANYONE could be that cold-hearted and not capable of showing any remorse is, perhaps, what makes them so terrifying to read about.
That's when I started thinking about their mindsets and how it makes them the kind of creature that is well-deserving of the word "monster."
The Dark Queens are all manipulators. They are power-hungry, cynical, arrogant, single-minded, and uncaring. They possess in their hands superhuman abilities that nobody else has: powers that, quite literally, make them overpowered. I mean, immortality? Omniscience? Limitless magic? Total mind control? I mean, damn!
But it's in this that something clicked with me. The Dark Queens have incredible powers, and they're irresponsible and uncaring about how it affects others.
In their minds, the world circles around them. They see themselves as gods and everyone else as insects that they don't mind crushing if they have half a mind to.
In their minds, "I'm more powerful than you. You can't do anything to stop me, so why should I care or feel bad if I hurt or kill you?"
That's the mindset of the Dark Queens, and also what makes them a Dark Queen: not their power, but the abuse of that power coupled with despicable arrogance.
The Gemini went about killing and torturing because they thought they were truly invulnerable. "Nobody can stop us, so what's there to fear?" In the end, though, they felt pain, and it was horrifying for them to bear. Without their power and that cocky arrogance, they were just two little brats with sickening personalities.
